Working as a Senior Researcher, the main purpose of the job is to carry out studies and research into future mobile phone technologies. At the senior level a fair degree of autonomy is expected, whilst still remaining focused on overall research and project objectives as defined by the Advanced Technology and Standards Group Manager.
Depending on the structure and size of the team in which you are placed, you may be technically responsible for a small number of more junior research engineers.
Key functions
The main tasks expected to be performed include, but are not limited to:
Collect and analyse engineering data and conduct research related to essential areas of future wireless / mobile communication technology.
Assist in directing and reviewing work undertaken in collaboration with universities and industrial partners.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other internal/external parties interested or involved in these activities.
Participate in and make presentations at conferences and meetings for engineering research and development.
Create and help create essential intellectual property in wireless / mobile technology areas
Prepare timely reports of research findings.
Establish and maintain a library of records and findings accessible to others involved in the group's activities.
Develop new methods and processes as required.
Provide guidance to engineering staff and other researchers as required.
Give technical support to the Standards Group as agreed with the Advanced Technology and Standards Technology Manager.
Assist in identifying staff training and development needs.
Assist in identifying the need to recruit additional members of the team.
Keep abreast of new developments and techniques in the mobile communication field.
All work is to be of a professional standard, paying due regard to safety, efficiency, cost effectiveness, time scales and the needs of the company.
Skills and experience
A degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering or any related discipline (an equivalent period of industrial experience may be substituted).
Between 8 - 12 years experience in the mobile communication research field.
Expert knowledge in mobile technology with a bias towards mobile systems, software or intellectual property is preferable.
Knowledge of research methods and techniques and methods of collecting and analysing data is essential.
A competent level of presentation, communication and planning skills.
Self motivation and ability to work alone, managing own work and setting sensible priorities according to perceived requirements.
Analytical and logical thinking capability.
A good understanding of documentation requirements.
Ability to learn and implement Corporate business philosophies.
