Network
Systems Engineer
|
| |
As
a result of significant business wins in the US and Europe, coupled
with an increasing need to demonstrate and support our technologies
for both existing and potential customers, our client is seeking
an experienced engineering professional to join its team as a
Network Systems Engineer.
Brief
Description of Role:
The
Network Systems Engineer is responsible for full life-cycle development
and support of technical demonstrations, making use of a range
of software and hardware to explain our technologies to customers.
For the right applicant, the role will develop to include the primary
technical support of our customer engagements, encompassing the
following duties:
• design, develop, support and present technical demonstrations of our
technology
• provide technical support for pre-sales activities with potential customers
• install, configure and support network units provided to customers for
evaluation purposes
• support integration of licensable software to customers
• provide post-integration support to customers, including co-ordination
of bug-tracking, versioning and response to feature requests
• collate and forward customer feedback to technical/commercial teams
• assist in development of maintenance and training materials
• contribute to requirements specification process for new projects
The
Network Systems Engineer will be given significant independence,
and will need to have the confidence to take ownership of project
activities, interacting as appropriate with technical and commercial
colleagues within the company, and directly with customers.
Technical
Knowledge:
• TCP/IP
data networking, including routing/switching - must be comfortable
with hands-on set-up of network devices and trouble-shooting of
typical networking issues. Experience with configuration of equipment
from leading suppliers (eg Cisco, Juniper) would be useful.
• Network applications - some hands-on experience with VoIP, video streaming,
videoconferencing and/or general network applications (including P2P) would be
desirable. Experience with traffic generation/monitoring equipment (eg SmartBits,
Ixia, Agilent) would also be useful.
• Programming - some experience of C in a commercial environment is required,
as:
- the Network Systems Engineer will have responsibility for developing/maintaining
code on our demonstration network units
- the Network Systems Engineer will need to be able to understand coding-related
issues well enough to be able to discuss these intelligently with both software
engineers and customers
• Other - experience with Unix-like environments and tools will be important.
Any knowledge of network Quality of Service (QoS), queuing theory or Java may
also be beneficial, but is not a pre-requisite.

Personal
Skills:
• Strong
communication skills - the role will require significant interaction with senior
technical and commercial staff, both from customer organisations and in-house.
This will involve both face-to-face and phone-based contact, including training
and presentations, and we will be looking for natural ability at explaining complex
technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Personal organisation - the role will generally involve running several
projects in parallel, so requires an ability to manage priorities, time and resources.
It is important that the Network Systems Engineer should have the experience
and professional drive not only to follow established procedures, but to propose,
discuss and develop new ones.
• Customer focus - the role demands an ability to work with customers in
such a way that they may gain tangible benefit from a relatively complex technology.
Patience, empathy and a commitment to high quality service delivery are pre-requisites.
• Friendly, with a sense of humour.
Likely
Background:
As
an indication, we would anticipate that a typical candidate for
this role would have worked for several years as a software developer
with good exposure to IP networking technologies, but was now
looking for a broader range of responsibilities, no longer limited
solely to code development, plus an opportunity to gain customer-facing
experience.
Location:
Based
in Bristol, UK. Requirement to travel, mainly to US, generally
several times each year for up to 1 week per trip and sometimes
at short notice. Will include attendance at major trade shows
with colleagues and visits to customer sites.
Flexibility:
Given
the nature of the role, the candidate must occasionally be willing
to work non-standard hours, including weekends and holidays,
to accommodate customer needs and project timelines.
Education:
Bachelor's
degree in Computer Science or similar.
Remuneration:
Neg, dependent on experience. Benefits include pension
scheme, private medical insurance, life assurance, permanent
health insurance and corporate health club membership.
