User Interface Designer |
| |
This
company at the forefront of new network technology primarily
for the growing
Internet market is esxpanding it’s development
teams. The rapid growth of new multimedia technologies and applications
means that the Internet (which is still largely based on 1980’s
technology) struggles to deliver services to the quality that people
expect. This company introduced a unique new approach to sharing
network resources. Now embedded in high-profile customers’ hardware,
this technology brings reliable delivery of services from home networks
to carrier-class infrastructure.
To continue this development they are seeking an experienced, high-calibre
user interface developer (Internet Tools, Java, Flash etc) to join
one of their small teams of highly dedicated engineers working on
innovative products for voice and video. (See our other adverts for
C/Embedded positions 3+ developers wanted)
Brief Description of Role
The Senior User Interface Developer will work alongside the team
of developers working on new products and technology. Responsibilities
will include:
• full
life-cycle graphical user interface (GUI) design and development,
including informal mock-ups using paper sketches and/or
prototyping tools
• implementation of GUIs to a production-grade standard
• liaison with external providers of graphical imagery
• liaison with our test team in Sophia Antipolis, France
• customer-facing and internal documentation
• work on customer accounts
Technical Knowledge
Graduate with 3+ years of GUI design/development experience. You
will enter the role at an exciting time, when implementation decisions
are being made on a significant green field project, for which ease-of-use
will be a key differentiator. You will be expected to be able to
contribute to this discussion from Day One.
For our current development plans, there will be a need to fulfil
several critical requirements, including:
• GUI deployment
across full range of web browsers, across multiple platforms, including
legacy home user systems
• delivery of impressive user experience to maximum proportion of end
users, with graceful degradation for all others
Typical skills that we believe would best suit this role are:
• extensive development for web using HTML, XHTML and related technologies,
across multiple platforms/browsers
• development using Adobe Flash, preferably with Flex and Flex Charting,
or an equivalent RIA technology. Solid experience in Java Swing or
similar with proven ability to acquire new skill sets may be acceptable.
Applicants invited for interview will need to provide a portfolio
of previous work, displaying both moderate implementation complexity
and design flair.
Also desirable is some knowledge of accessibility issues, internationalisation
and IP networking.
Personal Skills
• excellent
written English.
• proven ability to make sensible design decisions and work autonomously.
•
communication skills – confidence to lead meetings and present
complex ideas to a technical group.
•
teamwork – comfortable working as part of a group with a common
objective.
•
accuracy – an eye for detail is essential, and a “get
it right first time” attitude is important in a small team
when working to deadlines.
• friendly, with a sense of humour.
Location

Network
Systems Engineer -
South West UK (Bristol)
|
| |
As
a result of significant business wins in the US and Europe,
coupled with an increasing need to demonstrate and support
our technologies for both existing and potential customers,
our client is seeking an experienced engineering professional
to join its team as a Network Systems Engineer.
Brief
Description of Role:
The
Network Systems Engineer is responsible for full life-cycle development
and support of technical demonstrations, making use of a range
of software and hardware to explain our technologies to customers.
For the right applicant, the role will develop to include the
primary technical support of our customer engagements, encompassing
the following duties:
• design, develop, support and present technical demonstrations of our
technology
• provide technical support for pre-sales activities with potential customers
• install, configure and support network units provided to customers for
evaluation purposes
• support integration of licensable software to customers
• provide post-integration support to customers, including co-ordination
of bug-tracking, versioning and response to feature requests
• collate and forward customer feedback to technical/commercial teams
• assist in development of maintenance and training materials
• contribute to requirements specification process for new projects
The
Network Systems Engineer will be given significant independence,
and will need to have the confidence to take ownership of project
activities, interacting as appropriate with technical and commercial
colleagues within the company, and directly with customers.
Technical
Knowledge:
• TCP/IP
data networking, including routing/switching - must be comfortable
with hands-on set-up of network devices and trouble-shooting
of typical networking issues. Experience with configuration of
equipment from leading suppliers (eg Cisco, Juniper) would be
useful.
• Network applications - some hands-on experience with VoIP, video streaming,
videoconferencing and/or general network applications (including P2P) would be
desirable. Experience with traffic generation/monitoring equipment (eg SmartBits,
Ixia, Agilent) would also be useful.
• Programming - some experience of C in a commercial environment is required,
as:
- the Network Systems Engineer will have responsibility for developing/maintaining
code on our demonstration network units
- the Network Systems Engineer will need to be able to understand coding-related
issues well enough to be able to discuss these intelligently with both
software engineers and customers
• Other - experience with Unix-like environments and tools will be important.
Any knowledge of network Quality of Service (QoS), queuing theory or Java may
also be beneficial, but is not a pre-requisite.
Personal
Skills:
• Strong
communication skills - the role will require significant interaction
with senior technical and commercial staff, both from customer
organisations and in-house. This will involve both face-to-face
and phone-based contact, including training and presentations,
and we will be looking for natural ability at explaining complex
technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Personal organisation - the role will generally involve running several
projects in parallel, so requires an ability to manage priorities, time and resources.
It is important that the Network Systems Engineer should have the experience
and professional drive not only to follow established procedures, but to propose,
discuss and develop new ones.
• Customer focus - the role demands an ability to work with customers in
such a way that they may gain tangible benefit from a relatively complex technology.
Patience, empathy and a commitment to high quality service delivery are pre-requisites.
• Friendly, with a sense of humour.
Likely
Background:
As
an indication, we would anticipate that a typical candidate for
this role would have worked for several years as a software developer
with good exposure to IP networking technologies, but was now
looking for a broader range of responsibilities, no longer limited
solely to code development, plus an opportunity to gain customer-facing
experience.
Location:
Based
in Bristol, UK. Requirement to travel, mainly to US, generally
several times each year for up to 1 week per trip and sometimes
at short notice. Will include attendance at major trade shows
with colleagues and visits to customer sites.
Flexibility:
Given
the nature of the role, the candidate must occasionally be willing
to work non-standard hours, including weekends and holidays,
to accommodate customer needs and project timelines.
Education:
Bachelor's
degree in Computer Science or similar.
Remuneration:
£Neg dependent on experience. Benefits
include pension scheme, private medical insurance, life assurance,
permanent
health insurance and corporate health club membership.
