Jobs Remain Unfilled
Following on from my last post Re. Skills Shortages Worsen, we are seeing even more evidence that this is the case. "We have jobs that have remained unfilled for over six months and in some cases even longer. "The feeling now is that employers may have to be more flexible in their recruitment and experience/skills requirements if they are to fill these jobs. For instance a candidate with 5 years experience should be able to make the transition from one language to another very quickly so why not consider a C++ programmer for a Java or a C# position.
Recruiting outside of the UK/EU Market does not seem to be working as well as it did we suspect that the rush to obtain skills quickly has led to shortcuts in training or CV's that do not reflect a candidates true abilities. We have had too many recent examples of this where a candidate looks very good on paper but fails at first interview for technical reasons or who's experience fails to match the CV.
What's the answer? We need to generate more interest in a career as a software developer and then back this up with good University Education and Training. Alternatively I think we should look again at the Apprentice solution (My Preference) with Employers sponsoring a candidate through Education and Training guaranteeing a good job at the end.
